Speed Channel's Tommy Kendall chats with Alex Tagliani about the effect of the new mandatory pit stop rule. Tag is skeptical that it will really prevent fuel economy runs - he thinks teams will learn how to abuse it.

Cristiano da Matta passes Jimmy Vasser for the lead at the first corner. Behind them Bruno Junqueira stays ahead of Paul Tracy and Tony Kanaan.

On lap 31 Scott Dixon's Toyota explodes in a cloud of smoke on the front straight, bringing out a "full yellow" caution period.

The weird-looking Toyota Matrix pace car waits for the leaders to come around before picking up the field.

Bruno hits the tire barrier at Turn 1 while trying to catch the back of field after a pit stop.

Jimmy picks up the lead when Michael pits on lap 47. His next and final stop is on lap 61, where we see him locking up his brakes on cold tires as he exits the pits. The pit stop was taken under green and he emerges to find Michael Andretti and Max Papis back out ahead of him.

On lap 63 Mario Dominguez stuffs his car into the tires bringing out another full course yellow. Andretti and Papis dive for the pits while Jimmy gets held up behind the pace car. The race goes green with Andretti and Papis ahead of Vasser and no one needing further pit stops. Max successfully holds off Jimmy for eight laps but, as we see here, he eventually gets by.

On the last lap Jimmy makes one desperate last attempt to get by Michael, but he's not close enough.

Across the finish line, the checkered flag still waving behind them, the top three finishers of Michael Andretti, Jimmy Vasser and Max Papis close up to take the applause from a well-satisfied crowd.

This is Michael's first Grand Prix of Long Beach win since he took his first Champ Car victory in 1986, and at 16 years it's the largest span between victories for a driver at one venue in CART history.
